A Safari Adventure in Tanzania
In 2022, I had the incredible privilege of going on safari in Tanzania. To this day, I struggle to put into words just how breathtaking it was. Sitting in the middle of the Serengeti, I watched elephants, giraffes, wildebeest, deer (so many kinds!), cheetahs, leopards—the list goes on. It felt surreal. But what struck me most were the lionesses. I completely fell in love.
For hours, we watched two female lions, one heavily pregnant. They hunted (did you know 70% of hunts fail?), stretched, and rested in the tall grass. I asked our guides what made female lions so unique, and what I learned blew me away. No wonder I felt such a connection!
The Backbone of the Pride
Lionesses are the true backbone of every pride. They do the majority of the hunting, raise the cubs, choose den sites, and keep order within the group. Males may come and go, but the females remain—the heart of the pride. They stay with their birth families for life, building strong bonds with mothers, sisters, and daughters. Often, they give birth around the same time and share the work of motherhood—nursing each other’s cubs, grooming them, moving them out of danger, and even adopting orphans.
Unbelievable Toughness
These remarkable creatures are unbelievably tough. With night vision six times stronger than ours, they often hunt under the cover of darkness, most successfully at dawn or dusk. They don’t just provide food; they’ll fight to the death for their cubs, banding together to defend against hyenas or even male lions.
Extraordinary Teamwork
Their teamwork is extraordinary. Each lioness has a role in the hunt—some flushing prey, while others lie in wait for the ambush. They’re silent, nearly invisible in the long grass, sometimes just ten metres away yet undetected. In a burst, they can hit 60 km/h and leap more than 10 metres. However, their stamina is short, so the ambush has to be perfect.
Gentle Nurturers
And yet, despite their fierceness, they are also gentle mothers. I’ll never forget watching cubs climb all over their mother as she tried to nap. With a flick of her ears or a shift of her body, she set her boundaries. The cubs understood—she was protector, provider, and nurturer, but she also needed her space. Soon after, she’d lick their faces, nudge them close, and remind them of her fierce love.
The Heartfelt Grief of Lionesses
They grieve, too. When a cub or pride member dies, lionesses have been observed lingering at the body, vocalizing, or withdrawing in sorrow. It’s a poignant reminder of the deep emotional connections they share.
A Reflection of Humanity
It all sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Human mothers are much the same—fierce defenders of our families. We set boundaries, show patience, and teach our children how to survive in this demanding world. We wake early, stay up late, provide food and shelter, and hold our little ones in the safety of our arms.
And like lionesses, it’s easier when we have community. We learn from mothers, sisters, aunts, and friends. We may not sprint 60 km/h, but don’t underestimate how fast we can move when our child is in danger!
Building Our Own Communities
Now, as one of the older women in my own family, I’ve found that the instinct to love, protect, and serve hasn’t faded. Whether you’re a mother, aunt, sister, or grandmother, we each carry an important role in shaping a healthy community for the next generation. And if you don’t have that kind of support around you, it doesn’t mean you can’t build it in your own way.
Finding Your Place
What about you—where do you see yourself in this circle of community? Are you the fierce protector, the gentle nurturer, or perhaps the wise elder? Each role is vital, and together, we can create a tapestry of support and love.
Spreading Kindness and Positivity
As we reflect on the strength of lionesses, let’s remember to spread kindness and positivity in our own lives. We can inspire others to embrace their roles, just as lionesses do in the wild. After all, we’re all part of a larger community, and every act of love counts.
So, let’s lean into that warmth and connection. Let’s uplift one another and create a world filled with love and empowerment. Because when we come together, we can achieve incredible things.
